Running a product

Background worker

Here, a program that receives background work and performs it outside the visitor's immediate request. It needs a defined completion signal and failure behavior. The same word can mean other things, such as a browser worker or provider runtime.

You might see: job worker, task consumer, background processor

In a real project

A workshop image worker receives a queued task, creates a thumbnail and records completion. If it stops partway through, the system needs to know what remains unfinished.

A common mistake

Marking a job complete before its required work is durable. Define acknowledgment and retry behavior so interruption does not silently lose the task.
