How the web works

HTTP

HTTP is the shared set of rules clients and servers use to exchange requests and responses. It carries pages, images and API data. HTTPS protects that exchange with encryption; it does not decide whether a user is allowed to perform an action.

In a real project

Opening your reading-list page asks a server for the page. Loading its saved books may make another HTTP request to an API. Changing a filter on already-loaded books can happen entirely in the browser.

A common mistake

Treating every click as a server request, or treating HTTPS as proof that an application has correct permissions. Inspect the actual request and check authorization separately.
