How the web works

API

A defined way for software to interact with other software. It describes available operations and the expected inputs and results. A web API often uses HTTP requests, but APIs also exist inside libraries and operating systems.

You might see: application programming interface, service interface

In a real project

The workshop page requests available sessions through a documented endpoint. The response supplies session data in an agreed format, allowing the interface to display it.

A common mistake

Assuming an endpoint is safe because the interface uses it correctly. Validate incoming requests and enforce permission where the operation actually runs.
