Building a project
Dependency
A dependency is software your project relies on. In a JavaScript project, package.json lists required packages and version ranges. Some packages support the running app; others help develop, test or build it. Their compatibility matters alongside your own code.
You might see: package dependency, npm package, devDependency
In a real project
Your reading-list app uses a library to format dates and a separate test tool during development. The package manager installs the declared packages so the project's code and scripts can use them.
A common mistake
Installing a newer package because its version number is larger. Check what your runtime, framework and other dependencies support, then verify the changed behavior.
Put it into practice
These lessons open through your account. Your kit determines which are available.
