Migration

A database migration is a recorded change to the database's structure or data. Migration files let a team review and repeat changes in a known order. Applying one changes the database; committing the file alone does not apply it.

In a real project

You add an optional notes column to the reading-list table through a migration. You test it in an isolated database and check that both the current and planned app versions handle that structure before release.

A common mistake

Editing a live table without recording the change, or assuming every migration can be undone without losing data. Review compatibility and rehearse the appropriate recovery before applying a change.
